SUMMARY
My brief for A Level:
You work for an independent media production company. You have been given the task of producing
a three-minute opening sequence of a documentary for BBC Three.
The production of the opening sequence must include (as a minimum):
• Range of camera shots, including shot distances, angles and movement as appropriate to a
documentary.
• Editing of footage and sound.
• Soundtrack, which should include voice (voiceover and/or diegetic voices), sound effects and
appropriately edited music.
• At least two different uses of mise-en-scène.
• At least two characters representing at least two different social groups (e.g. as defined by
age, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality).
• Graphics/titles to include the title of the programme.
Interpreting the brief, my documentary follows the tribulations of a 19-year-old male trying to make it in the Performing Arts world, a volatile industry with high demands and endless pressure overcoming obstacles and disappointment. It focuses on his battle with an eating disorder whilst trying to stay in top shape and be positive regardless of the overwhelming uncertainty of the business; the high demands, the long hour rehearsals, the need to stay in excellent shape and countless auditions which have a toll on his well-being and financial situation.
The topics, bullying and anorexia, play a main role in my documentary, in the style of the BBC Three programmes, which deals with current affairs and mental health illness, being an ongoing problem in today’s youth which corresponds with the target demographic of 16-25-year-olds as stated in the brief. The blame lies with the young people’s fascination with social media which seems to dictate how people perceive themselves and the self-expectations of image, behaviour and level of success.
